Making a Difference

MLB All-Star and World Series Champion – Mark Buehrle Making a Difference

Mark made an immediate impact on the Jefferson College baseball program upon graduating from Francis Howell North High School in 1997 when he went 7-0 as a freshman and was named to the MCCAC All Conference Team. In his sophomore season as a Viking, he was named an NJCAA All-American after posting an 8-4 pitching record with a 1.45 ERA.

While at Jefferson College, he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 38th round of the Major League Baseball draft and assigned to the Class “A” Burlington Bees in 1999.

A year and half later, Mark was called up to the major leagues where he would begin his career with the Chicago White Sox (2000-2011) and become a World Series champion and Gold Glove All-Star. His stellar career also included time with the Miami Marlins (2012) and Toronto Blue Jays (2013-2015). Mark’s excellence included a no hitter and perfect game, outstanding defensive prowess that earned four Gold Glove awards, appearances in five MLB All-Star games, and a starting pitcher victory and save in the 2005 World Series. He pitched 200 innings in 14 consecutive seasons (2001–2014), tying Hall-of-Famers Greg Maddux, Phil Niekro, and Christy Mathewson.

Jefferson College congratulates Mark on his excellence in professional baseball as his number “56” is retired by the Chicago White Sox on June 24, 2017. The College is extremely proud of the role it played in providing a high-quality education and athletic development opportunities that propelled him to a phenomenal professional career.
