Apprenticeship Credit Option Program

Associate of Applied Science Degree (Apprenticeship Credit Option)
This program provides an opportunity for union employees, apprentice or journeyman, in Jefferson County and throughout the state of Missouri to access an educational program that recognizes workers’ pre-existing skills and abilities. Credit will be awarded for quality skill training that takes place outside the realm of traditional community college education.

This program recognizes the core curriculum of any apprenticeship training program that is approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards, a division of the Department of Labor. This allows an individual’s journeyman status to be transferred to Jefferson College satisfying a portion of the core curriculum requirements needed for an associate degree.

To complement an individual’s technical or on-the-job training, a component consisting of 18 hours of general education  is included. This enables individuals who have completed the degree requirements to not only receive their journeyman’s license, but an Associate of Applied Science degree in Apprenticeship Training which is now required by a number of companies.

Credit will be awarded for quality skill training that takes place outside the realm of community college education. This new degree will provide an opportunity for the union employees in Jefferson County and throughout the state of Missouri an access to an Associate of Applied Science degree that recognizes their pre-existing skill and ability.

A general education component is included to complement the technical or on-the-job training they have received. A number of companies have changed previous policies and now require an Associate of Applied Science degree in addition to a journeyman’s license.

A key element of the program involves recognizing the value and worth of apprenticeship, on-the-job training by granting college credit for this work experience. The program’s Associate of Applied Science degree not only elevates the significance of an individual’s apprenticeship training in the eyes of the community, but it also allows them to pursue an advanced degree and to increase their technical and relational skills.

This program is designed to accommodate students from registered as well as non-registered apprenticeship programs. There are as many options as there are types of apprenticeships in the region.

Cooperative partners include various Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) and some Non-Registered Apprenticeship Programs.

Degree Composite:

Apprenticeship Core = 45 hours
General Education Core = 18 hours
