Those on food stamps are now eligible to get free training at Jefferson College thanks to the SkillUp grant program that provides free tuition and support services to individuals receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (food stamp) benefits.
Through the College’s short-term training programs, SkillUp can help individuals achieve a new career path, obtain employment, and realize self-sufficiency.
To celebrate the opening of the new Jefferson College Vikings’ Vault food pantry for students, the College recently held a ribbon cutting and open house on the Hillsboro campus.
The event included an overview of the project and acknowledgment of the College’s Certified Professional Staff group for their role in suggesting and championing the project.
Former Missouri Governor Jay Nixon recently visited the Jefferson College campus in Hillsboro to view an extensive collection of arrowheads and artifacts donated by his family in honor of Jay’s late father, Jeremiah “Jerry” Nixon. The unique collection is being historically preserved, displayed, and used for educational study.
During his visit, Nixon also toured the College’s newly renovated Library, made possible by a substantial $1.7 million appropriation by the Missouri legislature as part of a statewide initiative he led for higher education capital projects during Nixon’s term.
Nixon is a native of DeSoto and both of his parents were deeply involved in the early history and establishment of the College.
Following a successful stargazing event in August co-hosted by Jefferson College and the St. Louis Astronomical Society for the Perseid meteor show and planets Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, the College will host several community observation nights this fall for those who want to learn more about astronomy.
The educational events, called “Second Saturday Star Parties,” are free and open to all ages. Each observation night will take place near the Softball Field, accessible from Jefferson College Drive, on the Hillsboro campus.

In connection with Jefferson College’s mission to provide diverse educational experiences for area residents of all ages, the schedule of events and artists has been announced for the annual Performing Arts and Cultural Enrichment (PACE) series.
The 2018-19 PACE season features 30 events spanning a wide range of fine arts entertainment genres.
